LifeGate launches the LifeGate PlasticLess project, a concrete commitment to clean up our seas from plastics, in collaboration with SeaBin
To protect the health of the sea and ours, is born LifeGate PlasticLess, the project of LifeGate that intends to contribute to the reduction of pollution of Italian seas through the collection of plastic waste in the waters of marinas and sailing clubs. The seas of the world, including the Mediterranean sea, are increasingly submerged in plastic. For the UNEP (United Nations environmental program) the depths of the Mediterranean are invaded by 100,000 plastic fragments of various sizes per sq. Km. Among the causes found are the productive activities, the seaside tourism, the port activities and the negligent behavior of still too many people, which cause tons of plastic to end up in the sea every day.
LifeGate and Seabin
Seabin is a waste collection basket floating in surface water capable of capturing about 1.5 kg of debris per day, or more than 500 kg of waste per year (depending on weather and debris volumes), including microplastics from 5 to 2 mm in diameter and 0.3 mm microfibres. Seabin is also able to capture many common waste that end up in the seas as cigarette butts, unfortunately also very present in our waters.
It works 24 hours a day and is therefore able to remove much more garbage than a person with a collection net. Although the device can not be used in the open sea, because it requires electrical connection, it is extraordinarily effective in areas such as ports because they are “accumulation points”, where most of the waste at sea converges.
Seabin in Italy
The LifeGate PlasticLess project has been activated in several Italian port areas including Venice Certosa Marina (VE) and will soon be installed in Marina dei Cesari (PU) both ports of the MPN Marinas network, always attentive to environmental issues together with Clean Sea Life, a project co-funded by the European Union that involves sea lovers in an extraordinary campaign of cleansing the coasts and depths of Italy. To learn more about the LifeGate PlasticLess project:: www.lifegate.it
