With the support of the European Union, Clean Sea Life is bringing marine waste to the public’s attention and promotes active and constant commitment to the environment
On the occasion of the last beach cleaning organized with Marina dei Cesari and in support of the European project Clean Sea Life, we decided to launch the # BandaBurrasca!
How does it work?
It’s very simple! L ‘# is born to share its commitment to the environment, activating individual and collective behavior and actions in defense of the sea and Italian beaches increasingly invaded by plastic, the greatest enemy of our seas.
As a project partner together with the National Park of Asinara, the CoNISMa, and the three research and conservation associations Fondazione Cetacea, Legambiente, MedSharks, we are constantly engaged in the realization of events to bring to the attention of as many people as possible the damages that each day, through our behavior, we bring to the surrounding environment but not only, we also organize with the support of the MPN Marinas network cleaning days useful beaches, not only to free the shores from waste, but also to catalog them to clarify the provenance and mapping of the areas where their accumulation is a threat to biodiversity. In fact, every initiative launched with Clean Sea Life requires the compilation of a monitoring form containing the types of waste that can be traced. Number and weight are two fundamental indicators for the collection of data useful for quantifying the phenomenon of “marine litter”.
It is important to remember that the plastics disperse irremediably in the sea and that, from the anchovies to the whales, from the turtles to the sea birds, there are at least 135 Mediterranean marine species that ingest plastic objects or end up trapped there. The result is often fatal: some die suffocated, others by gastrointestinal blockage, others still can not absorb food from food. Over time, plastic fragments, without ever completely dissolving, transforming itself into microplastic, an even more insidious danger because the fragments can be swallowed first by the plankton and then, gradually, by all the links in the food chain.
In the last cleaning beach, for example, most of the waste was made of plastic, hundreds of straws, those used in the summer for aperitifs and abandoned on the sand at the mercy of the wind, dozens of cotton bud sticks, many pieces of rest, nets used for the cultivation of mussels, many cigarette butts and even unidentified plastic wheels.
